Helping an older parent stay in their own home in Thomastown usually starts with a short list of things that have got harder: the shower, the meals, remembering the tablets, getting to appointments. Ability Aid Support has been providing in-home care since 2022. The home care services we deliver in Thomastown are paid for one of two ways, privately or through NDIS funding, and working out which one applies to your family is worth doing before you compare providers at all. Please call us on 1300 70 12 40, and the first conversation costs nothing.

Which Funding Pathway Applies to You
Two separate systems pay for care at home for older Australians, and they do not overlap.
The first is government aged care. You begin at My Aged Care, an assessment follows, and if you are approved, subsidised support at home is arranged through the Support at Home program. That pathway sits outside what we do here, so if a subsidised package is what your family wants, My Aged Care is the right first call, and we’d rather point you there on the phone than let you find it out three weeks in.
The second is everything else, and it is where we work. Our aged care support at home is either paid for privately or funded through an NDIS plan, where the person has one. Privately funded care needs no assessment and carries no waitlist. You decide what help you want, we quote it, and it starts.
Having both under one provider is less common than it sounds. Someone who is already an NDIS participant and is also getting older often ends up with their disability support and their aged care needs split across two organisations and two rosters. Here they do not have to be, whether the disability side of that sits here in Thomastown or with our disability support services in Mill Park up the road.
Where Ability Aid Support Fits
Ability Aid Support was started in 2022 by a Registered Nurse with a background across hospitals, aged care and support work. They had a firm belief that every client deserves staff who’ve been properly briefed before they walk in the door. The business supports approximately 30 people today. Around 90% of new clients arrive as referrals, usually from someone who has already watched the care hold up.
We are a registered NDIS provider and meet the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission requirements that come with that, the standard our disability support services in Bundoora are held to as well. Staff screening, insurance, clinical qualifications and our full service guarantees are set out on our About page rather than repeated across every suburb.
What a Support Worker Actually Does
Most of this work is the ordinary business of getting through a day.
- Personal care. Showering, dressing, grooming, and help getting in and out of bed or a chair.
- Meals. Shopping, preparing food, and sitting with someone while they eat if that is the part that has slipped.
- Domestic assistance. Cleaning, laundry and gardening, so the house stays safe to move around in rather than becoming another job for the family.
- Community access. Appointments, the shops, a regular walk, or a visit to family, with someone who already knows how things are done.
- Dementia care. Familiar faces and familiar routines, and support that works with memory loss rather than against it.
- Recovering care. The weeks after a hospital stay, when the discharge instructions list more than the household can absorb.
- Palliative care. Support at home through the last stage of an illness, alongside the palliative team.
- 24/7 care. Where someone cannot safely be left alone, cover can run around the clock.
One visit can carry several of these at once: a shower, a load of washing, and a lift to a specialist appointment in the same morning, rather than three organisations booking three separate visits.
Nursing Care at Home, and Where We Stop
The nursing care services we provide in Thomastown are Registered Nurse-led and delivered wherever the person lives. That covers wound care, PEG feeding and enteral care, medication administration, and catheter and continence support. It’s the part of the business built for people with more complex clinical needs, where Registered Nurse-led care makes the difference.
Our in-house team is built around Registered Nurse-led clinical care and hands-on support work. Where a physiotherapist has set an exercise program, or an occupational therapist has recommended rails and a shower stool, our workers follow those care plans and equipment recommendations, and keep the relevant clinician in the loop.

When Home Stops Being the Safer Option
Part of our job is giving you an honest, clear-eyed view on whether staying at home is still the safest option, even when that means a different conversation
Around-the-clock care at home is genuinely possible, and we deliver it. But there is a point where both the safety and the sums shift: when someone is up and disoriented most nights, when every transfer needs two people, when the medical need calls for nursing on site rather than nursing that visits. Residential aged care exists for exactly that, and for plenty of families it arrives as relief rather than defeat.
If that is the conversation you are having, an aged care assessment through My Aged Care is the step that opens those doors, and we’ll point you there early rather than stretch an at-home arrangement past the point where it works.
How Cost Works
There are no prices on this page, because no single rate would be honest for every arrangement.
The quoting works like this:
- NDIS-funded supports are billed in line with the NDIS Price Guide, so those rates are set by the scheme rather than by us.
- Private clients are quoted a fixed rate with GST added.
- Privately funded hours are not subsidised, so the quoted rate is what you pay, and the figures go in front of you in writing before anyone is rostered.
- The consultation and the quote are both free and carry no obligation. Payment is due in full, invoice by invoice.
Bring the affordability question to the consultation. Working out how many hours would actually make a difference is part of it, not something charged on top.
